The collective management of copyright and related rights in Switzerland is carried out by five collecting societies authorized by the state. Their activities are based directly on the Copyright Act (URG).
Literary and music dramatic works and audiovisual works. For performance rights (theater), membership is recommended.
Works of non-dramatic music. For authors and publishing houses with such works, membership is recommended. ProLitteris and SSA are responsible for dramatic music.
Audiovisual works by authors and producers. For screenwriting, directing and other professional activities, membership is recommended.
Related rights (neighboring rights) in the performances of musicians and actors, in the production of audio and video, and in radio and television broadcasts.
The joint umbrella organization of the five collecting societies in Switzerland. These partner societies work together in particular in the area of common tariffs ("CT"). Swisscopyright also comments on political issues relating to copyright.
The activities of ProLitteris are based on the Copyright Act and are supervised by independent authorities. They ensure compliance with the statutory provisions.
The authority is part of the federal administration and is responsible for intellectual property. In the field of copyright, the IPI accompanies legislative projects, grants the authorization of ProLitteris and supervises the management of the collecting societies.
The Federal Arbitration Commission for the Management of Copyrights and Related Rights (ESchK) reviews and definitively approves the tariffs in the area of mandatory collective management and in other areas defined by the Copyright Act (URG).
The BVG and Foundation Supervisory Authority Ticino, Eastern Switzerland and Zurich supervises the management of the Provident Fund and the Cultural Fund of ProLitteris.
The Office of Economic Affairs is the supervisory authority for the collecting societies licensed in Liechtenstein. In addition to supervising the management of the collecting societies, the Office reviews and approves the tariffs and distribution rules submitted.
